Open Question: Vectors Help Addition and Subtraction?

if vectors x and y are each of length of 3 units i.e x=y=3 if x + y=sqrt 17
what is x - y

i used the cosine law to figure out the angle for x +y and now i plan on subbing in the angle to find out what x - y is....is that correct? and what would be the cosine formula for x-y?
thank you!
