Open Question: Meltdown in Japan's nuclear reactor?
NHK is reporting that some of the fuel rods are exposed, ie the water level is not sufficient to cover the rods.
If there's no water to moderate neutron velocity, doesn't the fission reaction essentially stop? I get that high energy neutron are being released, and radioactive steam may be released. But can the water-moderated reactor run away to melt-down?
