Open Question: How can I tell the differences between animal & rock damages to fossils?
I'm studying the Pleistocene Epoch which is around 2.5 to 12,000 years ago. The fossils are from the recent discovery in Snowmass, Colorado. Predators during the time period include wolves and other similar carnivores
I'm mostly working with mastodon, mammoths, and sloths and similar mammals. The ribs on these creatures have many markings all throughout the bone, and it is difficult to tell what lines represent rock damage/earth damage and what lines represent the damages from carnivores teeth cusp.
I would like to know what I could see to indicate what is damage from the earth/rocks on fossils and what was gnawing from animals? I know I should look for gnawing patterns but it's hard to tell. Also is there anyway to tell if the animal that ate it was say, a wolf? Thanks
