Open Question: When to use the term Briars or Roses?

I just want some clarity on the use of the word 'briar' because it seems like (to me) that not all roses can be referred to as briars or that there is some distinction between the two. Recently in a music class i am taking i heard the song "barbra allen" in the song it says that a red rose grew from her sweetheart's grave and a green briar from hers until the two plants met and intertwined.Answer QuestionBe the first to answer this question.
