Open Question: A compound has a molar mass of 86.0 g/Mole and an empirical formula of c3h7. what is the molecular formula?

C3H7 means you have 3 carbons which weighs roughly 12.0 amu and 7 hydrogens which weigh 1.0 amu.

Total (C3H7) = (12*3) + (7*1) = 43.00 g

Since they gave you a molar mass of 86.0 g/mole and the molar mass of C3H7 is half that (43.00 g/mol), then you have to multiply by 2 (since 86/43 = 2) to get your molecular formula.

Therefore 3 Carbons * 2 becomes 6 carbons. And 7 hydrogens * 2 = 14 hydrogens.

Thus C6H14 is your new molecular formula.
