Open Question: I have some algebra problems can you help?

1) 10b = 11
= 10 x b = 11
= 10 x 1.1 = 11
Answer: 1.1

You have to work out what to times by 10 to get 11. 1 x 10 = 10 and 10 x 0.1 = 1. So 10 + 1 = 1.1

2) 16 + y = 77
= 77 - 16 = y
= 61
Answer: 61

The question tells you that 'y' must be the difference between 77 and 16. So you take 16 away from 77, which gives you 61.

3) x - 15 = 57
= 57 + 15 = x
= 72
Answer: 72

This question has the same kind of pattern as the last but instead the question shows you that 'x' must be the sum of 57 and 15.

4) 24 = 6a
= 6 x a = 24
= 6 x 4 = 24
Answer: 4

The questions says "24 = 6a" meaning "6 x a = 24". We know from the times tables that 6 x 4 = 24
which means 'a' must be 24.

5) 31 + 39 = 24 + y
= 31+ 39 = 70
= 70 = 24 + y
= 70 - 24 = y
= 46
Answer: 46

This problem is a bit trickier. First you must add 31 and 39 to get to 70 = 24 + y. Now the problem is similar to question '2)'. Answer it like that.

6) x+60.7=131.6
= 131.6 - 60.7
= 70.9

This final question may seem tricky because of the decimals but it is almost exactly the same format as question '2)'... again.
