Unfortunately this movie, and the ones that followied were responsible for the "aliens must exist" mentality entering mainstream thinking.

At least the aliens were friendly and not of the abnoxious shoot-em-up variety. So the movie did have some merit, unlike the mindless ones we tend to get today.
